Mills CalMag 1 Litre – Prevent Calcium and Magnesium Deficiency with Maximum Concentration
Calcium and magnesium deficiencies are the most common nutritional problems in intensive plant cultivation. Yet they are frequently identified only after symptoms have set in: yellowing leaf margins, necrotic spots, weakened stems and compromised flowering. Mills CalMag from Mills Nutrients prevents these issues structurally by supplying calcium and magnesium in a highly concentrated, immediately available form.
When Is CalMag Essential?
Not every grower requires CalMag as standard, but in specific situations its use is non-negotiable:
- Soft tap water: insufficient calcium and magnesium for healthy plant growth. Common across many regions in Belgium and northern Europe.
- Reverse osmosis water: virtually stripped of all minerals and must be remineralised before use in any feeding programme.
- Coco coir substrate: coco naturally binds calcium and releases sodium, creating deficiencies unless supplemented.
- Intensive PK supplementation: elevated phosphorus and potassium levels during late bloom can antagonise calcium and magnesium uptake.
Why Calcium and Magnesium Matter
Calcium is a structural component of cell walls and plays a critical role in cell division, root development and tissue rigidity. Without adequate calcium, plants become weak, disease-prone and underperform. Magnesium forms the central atom of the chlorophyll molecule and is essential for photosynthesis. Magnesium deficiency leads to chlorosis, reduced energy production and measurable yield loss.
Dosage and Application
Add 1 ml per litre of water to raise EC to the target level. For preventive treatment: apply 1 ml/L CalMag without other additives at a pH of 6.5, once per week. Calcium and magnesium are only efficiently absorbed at pH values above 6.3. Use CalMag throughout the entire cycle alongside Mills Basis A&B as base nutrition. Mills Vitalize provides additional structural reinforcement via silicon, while Mills Ultimate PK in the final bloom phase specifically benefits from CalMag supplementation to counteract PK-induced nutrient antagonism.

What dosage should I use for Mills CalMag?
Use approximately 1 ml per litre of water to adjust EC to the desired level. For preventive use, apply 1 ml per litre without other additives at pH 6.5, once per week. CalMag is highly concentrated — a small amount goes a long way.
Do I need CalMag if I use tap water?
This depends on your water hardness. Soft water, which is low in calcium and magnesium, is common in Belgium and requires CalMag supplementation. Hard water typically contains sufficient levels of both minerals. Measure your EC and water hardness to determine whether CalMag is necessary for your setup.
Why is pH 6.5 important for CalMag uptake?
Calcium and magnesium are only efficiently absorbed by plants at pH levels above 6.3. Below this threshold, both elements become poorly available even when present in the nutrient solution. A pH of 6.5 provides optimal conditions for maximum uptake of both elements.
Is CalMag essential when growing in coco coir?
Coco coir naturally binds calcium through cation exchange and releases sodium in return, creating calcium deficiency if not supplemented. When growing in coco, CalMag is almost always necessary regardless of your water hardness.
Can Mills CalMag be used to remineralise reverse osmosis water?
CalMag is ideally suited for remineralising RO water. Add CalMag first to your reverse osmosis water to establish a mineral baseline before adding other nutrients. This ensures more stable EC values and better overall nutrient balance in your feed solution.
