Superplant Ballast 400 Watt
Superplant Gear Box 400W Ballast — Class H Magnetic DUO Ballast, the Most Versatile Format in the Gear Box Range
The Superplant Gear Box 400W Ballast is the sweet-spot format of the Gear Box lineup — powerful enough for productive flowering cycles in a medium-sized grow tent, efficient enough to keep heat manageable without oversized ventilation. Built to the same Class H insulation standard, with the same metal-cased capacitor and 10-year service life as the 600W model, this ballast delivers professional Superplant build quality in the most widely requested wattage for indoor growing. Pair it with the Superplant Philips Greenpower 400W lighting set for a complete, brand-consistent installation.
400W — The Most Requested Wattage for 80×80 to 100×100 cm Grow Tents
The 400W HPS configuration has long been the most popular indoor grow lighting format — a position earned through its balance of performance, heat output and energy consumption. At 80×80 to 100×100 cm, a 400W HPS lamp delivers sufficient canopy penetration and lumen output for serious yields while producing meaningfully less heat than a 600W setup. For growers with limited extraction capacity, or those working in smaller spaces where temperature management is a concern, the 400W format hits a practical equilibrium that the 600W cannot match. The Superplant Gear Box 400W drives both HPS and MH lamps of 400W — run MH during vegetative growth for its blue-shifted spectrum and switch to HPS at flowering without changing equipment. The Superplant Super Red 400W lamp is optimised specifically for the bloom phase on this type of ballast.
Class H Construction Consistent Across the Gear Box Range
Superplant does not cut corners on the 400W model to position it as a mid-range option. The Gear Box 400W uses the same Class H thermal insulation as the 600W — permitting winding temperatures up to 180°C and providing the same thermal headroom that underpins the 10-year service life. The capacitor sits in its own metal enclosure, isolated from thermal exchange with surrounding components and protected from mechanical stress. The powder-coated steel housing with peripheral ventilation slots ensures effective passive heat dissipation over extended use periods. Four rubber feet absorb the characteristic low-frequency vibration of magnetic ballasts. CE certified, 2-year manufacturer warranty.
Plug & Play — 220-240V Cable Included, Universal IEC Output
The Superplant Gear Box 400W ships with a 220-240V mains power cable and an IEC output socket compatible with all standard reflector cords. Three steps to a running installation: lamp in reflector, reflector cord into IEC output, mains cable into wall socket. Input: 220-240V / 50Hz / 2.1A. Output HPS: 100V-4.5A. Use only standard 400W HPS or MH lamps — never hybrid HPS-MH lamps and never lamps of a different wattage. Order today for fast delivery to Belgium from our growshop. What grow tent size is the Superplant Gear Box 400W ballast best suited for?
The Superplant Gear Box 400W paired with a 400W HPS lamp is most effective in grow tents from 80×80 cm to 100×100 cm. For smaller spaces of 60×60 cm, the 250W format is more energy-efficient and produces less heat. For areas larger than 100×100 cm, the 600W model provides better canopy penetration and coverage. The 400W is the most versatile format: sufficient light intensity for productive flowering, with heat output that is manageable in mid-sized tents with standard extraction.
How does the Superplant Gear Box 400W compare to the 600W model?
Both models share the same Class H build quality, 10-year service life and 2-year warranty. The difference is purely in power output and coverage area: the 400W covers 80×80 to 100×100 cm, the 600W covers 100×100 to 120×120 cm. The 400W also draws less power at 2.1A input versus 2.8A for the 600W, which represents a meaningful energy cost saving over a full grow cycle. Choose based on your actual grow space dimensions.
Why is the Superplant Gear Box 400W not compatible with hybrid HPS-MH lamps?
Hybrid HPS-MH lamps require a specific voltage and current profile that differs from standard HPS or MH lamps. A magnetic ballast designed for pure HPS or MH operation cannot deliver this profile accurately, resulting in unstable ignition, excessive ballast heat, or shortened lifespan for both the ballast and the lamp. Always use standard 400W HPS or standard 400W MH lamps only. Never use lamps of a different wattage with this ballast.
Should I place the Superplant Gear Box 400W ballast inside or outside the grow tent?
Placing the ballast outside the grow tent is generally recommended where possible, as magnetic ballasts generate heat during operation and keeping that heat source outside the tent reduces the thermal load on your growing environment. If the ballast must be placed inside the tent, ensure it is on an elevated surface with adequate clearance around all sides for the ventilation slots to function. Never place it directly on the floor, cover it, or stack items against it.
