Timers and programmers: from mechanical to digital

Consistent light schedules are non-negotiable in indoor cultivation. Vegetative growth typically requires 18 hours of light and 6 hours of darkness, while flowering demands a strict 12/12 cycle. Even a drift of a few minutes per day can disrupt the flowering transition or cause light stress in sensitive varieties. The Otio 3500 W timer handles the heavy inductive loads generated by magnetic ballasts powering 400 and 600 W HPS lamps. When an HPS lamp fires up, the ballast draws an inrush current 3 to 5 times higher than its nominal consumption for several seconds — standard timers deteriorate quickly under these repeated surges, while the Otio 3500 W is purpose-built to absorb them over years of daily operation.

Power strips, relays and load distribution

A single grow tent typically requires power for 3 to 5 devices: the lamp or driver, an extraction fan, a circulation fan, and potentially a heater or humidifier. Plugging all of these into one wall socket is both inefficient and unsafe. Our power strips come in 3, 4, 5 and 6 socket configurations, with or without individual switches. Models with per-socket switches allow you to isolate a single circuit during maintenance without affecting the rest of the installation. For larger operations, the Cli-Mate Timer Relay 4 distributes the signal from one master timer across 4 independent circuits — keeping wiring tidy, preventing timer overload, and giving growers with multiple tents centralised control from a single point.

IEC cables and matching gauges

Cable gauge matters more than most growers realise. An undersized cable generates heat, increases resistance and creates a genuine fire risk in the enclosed, humid environment of a grow tent. Our selection includes 0.75 mm² cable for lighter loads such as fans and small LED drivers, and 1.5 mm² cable for ballasts rated at 400 W and above. The IEC male-to-female cable provides a clean, standardised connection between ballast and reflector, eliminating improvised wiring and reducing contact resistance. For complete setups with climate control, add up all consumption figures and keep total load below 80 % of the power strip's rated capacity.
