The Alu-Dec 127 mm is the most popular size for hobby setups running extractors around 250 m³/h. The Alu-Dec 163 mm pairs with 400-550 m³/h fans for grow tents of 120×120 cm and larger. For higher airflow demands, the 203 mm, 250 mm and 315 mm options ensure unrestricted air movement.

All Alu-Dec ducts feature multi-layer aluminium construction reinforced with spiral steel wire, delivering mechanical rigidity with full flexibility. You can route them through tight openings, make sharp bends and reposition without tools. One critical note: Alu-Dec ducting ships compressed. Always stretch it fully before installation — a partially compressed duct creates internal turbulence that can reduce effective airflow by 30-40%.

Sono-Connect: quiet operation and condensation prevention

When noise is a concern or the duct run passes through an unheated attic or basement, the Sono-Connect 127 mm or Sono-Connect 203 mm provides the answer. The high-density polyester foam layer absorbs fan vibrations and significantly attenuates noise transmitted through the duct. The thermal insulation simultaneously prevents warm humid air from condensing against cold duct walls, avoiding dripping and potential water damage. The Sono-Connect is available per metre and in 10-metre rolls, so you can order exactly the length your installation requires without unnecessary expense. Installation follows the same approach as standard Alu-Dec: identical hose clamps, identical flexibility, with the added benefit of acoustic dampening and thermal protection.

Selecting the right diameter for your setup

The rule is straightforward: duct diameter must match your extractor and filter connections. An undersized duct increases air resistance and forces the motor to work harder, resulting in more noise, higher energy consumption and shortened equipment life.

Installation tips for peak performance

Keep runs as short and straight as possible. Every metre of duct adds roughly 5% pressure loss, and every 90° bend equals an additional metre of straight duct. Use two 45° bends rather than a single right angle where space allows. Secure all connections with hose clamps and check for leaks by running your hand along the joints while the system operates. For horizontal runs exceeding 2 metres, support the duct with hanging brackets to prevent sagging that creates low points where condensation accumulates. Inspect ducting visually every quarter for tears or loosened connections and clean the interior every six months using compressed air or a flexible brush to remove dust buildup that gradually reduces effective diameter. Replace any ducting showing tears, lost flexibility or air leaks at seams despite retightening — in continuous-use environments, plan preventive replacement every two to three years.
